During our visit at the university of Rouen on 20/11/2024 an interesting activity took place. The professor of Rouen, Elena Karachotziti, organized a simulation of a School council working on management on gender based violence.
Three groups were created: students, teachers and parents. Each of them developed a short statement outlining the most important things to be included in a policy against gender- based violence and also wrote a paragraph on how occurences of gender-based violence should be addressed.
Some of the suggestions that were heard were the below:
α) Students
-zero tolerance in harassment (expulsion from school, harder punishment in these kind of incidents)
-places for harassment victims
-help people who feel alone as they are more difficult to socialize
-all places should be secure
b) Parents
-every gender has to be respected
-there should be no discrimination
-direct punishment to people who harass
-keep society aware with internet publication
-meeting with victims and abusers
-abusers should be led in community services and in social works
-supervising abuseres
c) Teachers
-educational movies and videos should be presented to students from primary school
-suggest sensibilization activities
-create rest rooms
-fight against discriminations
-mixed couples on the desks in classroom
-family socialization inside schools (A lot of times children reproduce the behaviour models of their parents. So, teachers and families should work together in order to achive goals.)
At the end, both children and teachers shared personal experiences about sexist comments and gender based discriminations that have been recieved.
