During our visit at the University of Rouen on 20/11/2024, a lecture was held by the professor of the University of Corinth Despina Karakatsani on the topic of gender stereotypes. The title of the project was «Ulysses and Penelope».

The children participated very willingly as they found both the text and the discussion that followed very interesting.

Odysses and Penelope

Here are some of the stereotypes discussed:

a) the woman was considered the property of the man/father and was offered as a trophy

b) the woman had to combine beauty, prudence as well as skill in domestic work

c) the woman had to be faithful to her husband regardless of his own behavior

d) the woman dedicates herself exclusively to child rearing and domestic work while the man is the warrior.

The children talked about whether these stereotypes are perpetuated even in this day and age.
